Intro to Buddhism & Meditation

This is a monthly introduction to Tibetan Buddhism and meditation for Westerners.

We are lay practitioners of Buddhism, meaning that, unlike Buddhist monks and nuns, we have jobs, partners and families.

Our monthly introduction explains what Buddhism is, and the benefits of practising Buddhist meditation. We'll be explaining the basics of how to meditate, and conduct a brief group meditation so you can try it for yourself.

As there is a significant interest in these sessions, we repeat them every first Tuesday of the month.

The introduction starts at 7:30pm.

Questions? You can ask at auckland@buddhism.org.nz.

We're thrilled to invite you to the ultimate introduction to Buddhism by its foremost Western teacher - now coming to Auckland.

Lama Ole has been a major driving force in bringing Buddhism to the West, and to date has established more than 629 Diamond Way Buddhist centres in 44 countries around the world. His unique synthesis of modern style and ancient wisdom helped create the largest body of students practicing Diamond Way Buddhist methods in the West.

Always fresh and lively, Lama Ole's lecture will cover the history and philosophy of Tibetan Buddhism, and the principles of meditation.

Schedule

The lecture starts at 7pm.

Tickets

No registration is necessary - the tickets can be purchased at the door.

$18 - Waged.
$13 - Unwaged.

Books

Lama Ole's books will be available for purchase at the lecture, including his best-selling introduction to Buddhism: The Way Things Are (Blue Dolphin Publishing, USA).

His other books include Entering the Diamond Way; Mahamudra; Riding the Tiger (all from Blue Dolphin Publishing); and The Great Seal (Fire Wheel Publishing, USA).

Auckland, 2011 - Lama Ole Nydahl shares his knowledge about realising the mind's full potential through Buddhist meditation.

Lama Ole Nydahl

In 1969, Ole Nydahl and his wife Hannah became the first Western students of H.H. the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. After completing three years of Buddhist philosophy studies and intensive meditation training - including the transmission for a unique Diamond Way Buddhist practice called Conscious Dying (tib. Phowa) - Ole Nydahl began teaching Buddhism in Europe at the request of the 16th Karmapa.

Lama Ole has since transmitted the blessing of the lineage in a different city nearly every day, travelling and teaching worldwide. His depth of knowledge and dynamic teachings inspire thousands of people at his lectures and meditation retreats.

Shamar Rinpoche has said "In 1973 the 16th Karmapa ordered Ole and Hannah to teach and predicted that they would be very successful in spreading the Buddha's teachings in the West. The 16th Karmapa taught them their main practices, the Guru Yogas on the 8th and 16th Karmapas. They kept their samaya without any doubt, following and fulfilling Karmapa's wish. Ole is carrying out the activity of the 16th Karmapa."

More information about Lama Ole Nydahl can be found here.

Meditation: the Science of Happiness

PUBLIC TALK BY PSYCHIATRIST AND BUDDHIST TEACHER, KLAUS KALTENBRUNNER

True happiness is something most of us strive for, but rarely experience. It hovers on the horizon, waiting on the other side of a new job, a better body, more money. Yet the constant lesson of life, seemingly so hard to grasp, is that happiness is a state of mind, not something that can be taken from the outside world.

In Buddhism, meditation means "effortlessly remaining in what is." Through meditation, we experience the joy that is our mind, and discover lasting happiness. This insight helps us live meaningful lives and benefit others.

Course schedule
